Love of a Horse

by Chuck West

There ain't no why nor wherefore
To a man's love for his horse;
It's just a deep emotion
That runs its own natural course.

I've seen men plum' a'blubber,
Swear sand was in their eyes,
But it was just that ol' Dobbin
Was headed for that pasture in the sky.

Now the object of this affection
Ain't always easy t'understand.
Some mighty broke-down nags have strummed
Th' heartstrings of many a man.

"W'all, he used to be a cow horse
Out on the O-Bar-O!"
"And I'm sure he was a good'n', pard,
But that was many years ago."

"Jes cause he's blind in one eye,
An' kinda saggin' in th' middle,
I can feel he really trusts me
When I'm settin' in th' saddle."

It's just somethin' really special
When a half ton or more of horse
Wraps his head around your shoulder
And hugs you with gentle force.

He's just tryin' to say he loves you.
It's hard to describe th' thing;
If any of you have been there,
You'll know just what I mean.

So don't try to understand it,
T'ain't important that you do,
When a man's most favorite sweetheart
Is his saddle horse, true blue.
